There are smiling faces all around in the Mackay family this week after local prospector Luke Mackay and a friend discovered a monster gold nugget weighing in at a whopping 28 ounces.
“28 ounces! Found by myself and a friend on Saturday whilst metal detecting. Happy gold hunting, woohoo! Here nuggy nuggy nuggy….” Luke said.
Victoria’s historic goldfields are renowned for delivering HUGE gold nuggets to those lucky enough to find them. Some nuggets have been found just sitting on the ground, like a Bendigo family in 2019 who literally stumbled across a 20-ounce nugget whilst walking their dog.
Most prospectors will tell you it’s hard going and not for the faint-hearted. Some spend a lifetime searching and find little, or worse – nothing.
Modern-day metal detectors with ever-increasing technology allow today’s prospectors like Luke to penetrate deeper into the ground than ever before. Old goldfields once thought “worked out” are now being seen as the new gold rush frontier.
The 21st-century gold rush is most definitely underway, and it’s no longer a matter of if, but when the next hand of faith gold nugget will be discovered. Luke Mackay’s discovery is merely a taste of what is to come.
